Women have for a long time been more health conscious than men.
Dieting has always been popular, with magazines offering magical-sounding
diets to help shed those extra pounds they say you shouldn't have.
But being healthy is more than losing a few pounds. Healthy eating is
just one aspect, and should be considered along with exercise,
smoking and alcohol intake as well as medical checks such as regular
cervical smears, breast self-examination, blood pressure and urine examinations.
Healthy eating is about eating the right kind
of food, maintaining the balance between carbohydrates, proteins and
fats in the diet. Generally, healthy eating involves eating less fat
and more fibre as a high fat diet contributes to obesity and heart disease.
A ratio known as the Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to determine
whether someone's weight is within the normal range, or above or
below the recommended limits. Calculate your BMI here.
